How Much Exercise is Too Much?
Staying in motion is one way to be healthy, along with eating well and adding to your diet with healthy vitamins and supplements. In fact, staying active is one the best ways to be healthy and fit, and improves the way you feel as well!
Why Exercise?
There’s so many reasons to keep moving, including:
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight
Prevent or lower high blood pressure
Lower blood sugar
Reduce your risk for kidney disease, heart disease, stroke and even certain types of cancer
Prevent or mitigate depression and other mental health issues
And additionally, you’ll find that moving more can build more energy for work and play, and you may find that you will be able to handle stress better, too.
How Much Exercise is Too Much?
Although you may think you can never get enough exercise, there can be too much of even a good thing.
The most common goal for activity is cited as 150 minutes of movement a week, preferably 30 minutes of activity every day or most days. By movement, we’re referring to moderate activities, like walking or dancing. These forms of movement increase your heart rate and breathing, but they also allow you to talk as you stay in motion.
Be sure to:
Start out slowly if you haven’t been active regularly
Spread your movement throughout the week
Schedule your active time and stick to it
Make your movement enjoyable – share it with others
Short on time? Then break up your movement into two or three short walks of around ten minutes a day. Move and stretch when sitting at the computer or watching TV.
And, be sure to talk to your doctor about the best exercises for you, particularly if you have any existing health conditions.
Don’t Over Do It
Even in just 150 minutes a week, you can still push yourself too hard. Stay self-aware, and recognize any effects of exercising too much, like excessive tiredness or soreness.
Watch out for:
Bone or muscle injuries caused by running too far, lifting more weight than you should, or just pushing yourself too hard, which can lead to injuries
Allow your body to rest between exercise sessions if you feel tired or run down
Design a workout routine that utilizes different muscles or intensities on different days of the week, such as yoga on Monday, jogging or walking on Tuesday, to avoid injury and prevent your body from adjusting so much to the same exercises that the progress and some of the benefits of movement stall
And naturally, if you haven’t exercised in a while, implementing exercise can cause a little soreness or tiredness when you first get started. That’s nothing to worry about. Remember the many benefits exercise can bring, and just keep on moving!
