What Do You Eat for Healthy Hair?

Everyone wants strong, healthy, and attractive hair. Yet aging and genetics can affect the look of your hair, particularly if you consume a diet without the right nutrients, which can cause hair loss.

While you can’t control your age or your genes, you can control your diet! So, what do you eat for healthy hair, and to promote hair growth? Here are some tips.

Foods to Improve Hair Health

First of all, protein and biotin are two nutrients thought to improve hair growth. A lack of either nutrient can make hair thin. So can a lack of vitamins from A to E. Consuming a healthy diet can alleviate or prevent these problems.

The best foods to consume for healthy hair include:

Eggs – One great source of both nutrients is eggs, which also contain hair-healthy zinc and selenium.

Berries – The strong antioxidants contained in berries help protect hair and promote its growth. Berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins such as Vitamin C, which have been shown to aid in the production of collagen.

Spinach – Leafy, green, and packed with nutrients from iron to Vitamins C and A, spinach can help prevent or improve hair loss, especially for those who are iron deficient.

Fatty Fish – Salmon, mackerel, and herring are all great sources of omega-3 fatty acids, linked to healthy hair growth. Not into fish? A fish oil supplement may fit the bill.

Sweet Potatoes – packed with beta-carotene, which creates Vitamin A, sweet potatoes can increase hair growth rate, and encourage thicker hair growth, too.

Avocados – containing both healthy natural fats and hair-important Vitamin E, put the guacamole in your diet to help neutralize free radicals and protect your scalp, too.

Nuts and Seeds – a convenient snack, nuts and seeds also increase Vitamin E, and promote hair growth.

Sweet Peppers  – are rich in vitamins A and C, both good for hair.

Oysters – are a terrific source of natural zinc that supports both hair growth and repair.

Beans – Not only are beans a terrific plant-based protein source, they’re also a good zinc source, a nutrient that is essential to hair growth. Soybeans are also thought to help promote hair growth.

What You Eat Makes Healthy Hair

In short, the foods you eat have a major effect on hair health. And if you lack important nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C, D and E, or are experiencing a loss of iron, biotin, protein and essential fatty acids in your diet, your hair may suffer. Lacking these nutrients, your hair growth can slow, hair can become brittle or break, or you may even lose hair.

But, luckily, eating foods rich in these nutrients can correct any nutritional deficiency, promoting hair growth, and slowing or eliminating hair loss. Simply try adding some suggested foods, from fatty fish to nuts and beans, to your diet.

If you find you can’t regularly eat these foods, or you can’t always eat a variety of healthy produce, then make sure you’re getting the supplements you need to nourish your body.
