Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Health
It’s spring – the perfect time to air out and organize your home – but even more so, a great time to spring clean your health.
Wondering how to start? Here are some tips!
Eat Plenty of Spring Seasonal Produce
This time of year you should find plenty of fruits and veggies in season, and it’s time to stock up. Whether it’s mushrooms or bell peppers, berries or zucchini, these nutrient rich foods are fresh and available in spring. And while you’re at it, try to get your healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and seeds rather than from consuming fried or processed foods that are far less healthy.
Go Lean
Along with going for those healthy fats, you should also consider avoiding snacks, fatty dips, and fatty cuts of meat overall.
Moderate Alcohol
One drink a day for women, two for men – or fewer if you wish. Substitute a delicious probiotic-rich kombucha, green tea, or sugar-free sparkling water when you can!
Keep Yourself Hydrated
Speaking of things to drink, spring and summer can bring dehydration with increased outdoor activities. Drink water throughout the day, which can also help to prevent overeating, as well as providing the moisture your body needs to stay active and keep limber, too.
Get in Motion
While it’s important to stay active year ‘round, spring makes an ideal time for outdoor physical activity, whether it’s taking a walk under those flowering trees or doing yoga in the park, or gardening. Bring that water bottle along, too!
Getting some outdoor exercise also means outdoor sunshine, which can elevate your mood, boosting Vitamin D levels and serotonin.
Sunshine and Sunscreen
While exposure to sunlight produces vitamin D, good for the health of your bones and skin, it can also cause UV damage, wrinkles, and skin cancer. So wear your sunscreen outdoors, keep a hat handy, or consider clothing that has built-in SPF. Remember to reapply that sunscreen every few hours, more frequently if you’re swimming or at the beach.
Sleep Sweet
Get ready for a relaxing night’s sleep by limiting late-in-the-day caffeine, avoiding screen time and large meals within two hours of your bedtime, and try to be consistent about when you go to sleep and wake up each day.
Be Allergy Aware
Pollen is one part of spring – but it might not be a part you enjoy. You can reduce your exposure to potential allergen by using over-the-counter saline sprays, or a neti-pot to flush them out and reduce allergies. You might also consider an air filter in your home!
Spring Doctor’s Visit
Spring is a great time for an annual check up or physical. An annual screening for both cancer and heart disease, as well as monitoring your blood pressure and heart rate, is good for your body and your peace of mind.
Be sure to discuss any medications you are taking to see if they’re still necessary and make sure you’re taking them correctly, too.
